CURATE
The curate of the church where the Pardoner and the Friar have resorted to extort money from the congregation. The Curate tries to throw the two rascals out of his church, and calls the constable Neybour Pratte to help him, but the knaves beat them.

FRIAR OR "FRERE"
A greedy and litigious Friar who, by feigning holiness and exalting poverty, tries to extort money from a congregation. He enters into competition with the Pardoner, who has gone into the church for the same purpose, and they fight. At the end of the play, however, the Friar joins forces with the Pardoner against the Curate and Neybour Pratte, who have tried to throw the two rascals out of the church.

NEYBOUR PRATTE
Neybour Pratte is the constable the Curate calls to help him in throwing the Pardoner and the Friar out of his Church. They do not succeed in that, and are beaten by the two rascals instead.

PARDONER
A shady individual, heir to Chaucer's Pardoner, who tries to extort money from a congregation by presenting dubious bulls and absurd and ridiculous relics. He quarrels with an equally knavish Friar that he has found in the church, and they fight. At the end of the play, however, the Pardoner joins forces with the Friar against the Curate and the constable Neybour Pratte, who have tried to throw the two rascals out of the church.
