a synoptic, alphabetical character list

ABRAHAM

A Jew. Selimus, having seized the crown from Bajazeth, sends for Abraham, whom he orders to poison Bajazeth before he leaves Byzantium. Abraham agrees, but in an aside states he would more willingly poison Selimus. Finding Bajazet and Aga, Abraham offers Bajazet a drink. Bajazet asks Abraham to drink first, and then, after Bajazet has drunk, to assist Aga. After all three have drunk, Abraham reveals that the cup contained poison and that he was sent by Selimus to kill them. Abraham dies, glad to be in the company of Bajazeth and Aga.

ACOMAT

Son of Bajazet and Soldan of Amasia. After Selimus is defeated in battle by Bajazet, Acomat decides to abandon his life of luxury and take up arms, so that if his father gives him the crown as he has promised, he and his followers will be able to fend off any challengers. While his Vizir warns his arming might harm his father's view of him and Regan counsels him to wait and take up arms once he has the crown, Acomat orders them, in spite of the risks, to march towards Byzantium to discover Bajazet's intentions. He sends Regan to Bajazet to request that he relinquish the crown, but when Acomat receives Bajazet's written refusal he tears it up and vows to take up arms against his father. He plans to march to Natolia and begin his revenge by killing Mahomet, Bajazet's grandson. Later, Acomat appears with the Vizir, Regan, and his soldiers before Mahomet's castle in Natolia and summons Mahomet to a parley, in which he orders Mahomet to surrender the town or face slaughter. When Mahomet refuses to surrender, Acomat orders his forces to scale the walls. They capture Mahomet and Acomat orders that he be thrown off of the castle wall on to a group of upturned spears. They also capture Zonara, Mahomet's sister, who pleads for her life; Acomat has her strangled. He then orders his forces to kill everyone in Natolia. After destroying Natolia, Acomat desires further revenge. He receives Aga, messenger from Bajazet, who warns him that he faces Selimus' fate if he continues to fight against Bajazet. Although Aga warns Acomat that tyranny never succeeds, Acomat vows to continue ruling by force and fear. Acomat pulls out Aga's eyes and orders Regan to cut off Aga's hands, which he stuffs into Aga's bosom. He sends Aga back to Bajazet, promising to inflict greater cruelties on Bajazet himself. Later, having formed alliances with Persia and Egypt, Acomat, along with the Vizir, Regan and his soldiers, welcomes Tonombey, son of the Egyptian Soldan, to the Turkish realm and urges his forces on to Amasia to aid the citizens and his Queen. Acomat and his forces encounter Selimus and his forces and Acomat vows to rightfully take the crown from Selimus. During the battle with Selimus' forces, Acomat is captured by Sinam. After the battle, Selimus orders Acomat to kneel to him. Acomat refuses and defies Selimus and is subsequently strangled by Sinam.

AGA

Follower of Bajazet. After Belierbey delivers new of Acomat's conquest of Natolia, Bajazet sends Aga to negotiate with Acomat. Arriving before Acomat, Aga reminds Acomat of Selimus' fate and warns him of the dangers facing a ruler who ignores morality and religion. When Acomat promises to kill Bajazet, Aga hopes to never see that day, which prompts Acomat to pull out Aga's eyes. Similarly, when Aga vows to use his hands to murder Acomat, Acomat orders Regan to cut them off; Acomat then stuffs the hands in Aga's bosom. Aga calls on the heavens to avenge this cruelty and asks to be led back to Bajazet. Led before Bajazet, Aga informs him that Acomat vows to take Bajazet's life and has Mustaffa show Bajazet the present Acomat has sent him–Aga's severed hands. Aga agrees to Bajazet's offer to care for him, and, after Bajazet transfers power to Selimus, exits with Bajazet to retire to Dimoticum. While traveling and dressed in a mourning cloak, Bajazet sits with Aga to lament their misfortunes. Abraham offers them a drink and Bajazet asks Abraham to assist Aga. After all three have drunk, Abraham reveals that the cup contained poison and that he was sent by Selimus to kill them. Abraham dies, followed by Bajazeth. Aga finds some consolation in dying with his sovereign and dies himself.

ALADIN

Son of Acomat. Receives a message from Mustaffa warning him of Selimus' plan to kill him and his brother, and vows to flee to Persia.

ALEMSHAE

A "ghost character". Eldest son of Bajazet, killed by Ottrante while fighting against Ramurchan and his forces.

AMURATH

Son of Acomat. Receives a message from Mustaffa warning him of Selimus' plan to kill him and his brother, and vows to flee to Egypt.

BAJAZET

Emperor of the Turks. Begins the play with a long monologue outlining the cares a ruler faces. He laments the loss of his allies, Ishmael the Perisan Sophi, Caragius Bassa, and Hali Bassa, and the loss of his eldest son Alemshae in battle versus Ramurchan and his Tartars. Forced to conclude a peace with his enemies, Bajazet laments the challenges his three sons pose for him, particularly Selimus, who openly seeks the crown. Although Bajazet wants the crown to go to his son Acomat, Selimus has popular support as well as the support of the Janissaries. Bajazet is left having to overlook Selimus' treachery or else face overthrow at the hands of the Bashaws. Chereseoli and Mustaffa enter to Bajazet and console him by asserting their loyalty, but two Messengers then enter, bringing Bajazet news that Selimus has arranged a marriage with Ramurchan's daughter and is marching towards Bajazet leading a force of Tartars and his followers from Trebizond. Bajazet then receives Occhiali, Selimus' messenger, and refuses to believe Selimus' professions of loyalty, seeing them as a ploy to gain the crown. Bajazet grants Selimus authority over Samandria, and sends Chereseoli with Occhiali to deliver this news to Selimus. Bajazet then takes Mustaffa's counsel and prepares to move himself and his forces to Byzantium, in order to protect the town against Selimus. Leading his army to Byzantium, Bajazet encounters Selimus at the head of his army and chastises him for his disloyalty. Selimus counters by accusing Bajazet of misunderstanding him and being disloyal to him by willing the crown to Acomat. After defeating Selimus' forces in battle, Bajazet laments the death of Chereseoli and orders the execution of Ottrante, who was responsible for the earlier death of Bajazet's son Alemshae. Bajazet then promises to reward his loyal followers once they arrive in Byzantium. Later, wearied by the cares of ruling and fearing further rebellions from his sons, Bajazet sleeps. He is awakened by Regan, who was sent from Acomat, asking Bajazet to pass the crown on to Acomat in Bajazet's lifetime as he had promised. Another messenger arrives from Corcut asking Bajazet to keep the crown himself while he lives. Bajazet, unsure what to do, seeks the counsel of his Bashaws; Mustaffa, speaking on their behalf, counsels him to keep the crown to avoid civil war. Bajazet agrees with Mustaffa's advice and begins to plan how he can pacify Acomat. Bajazet's fears regarding Acomat seem to be confirmed by the entry of Mahomet's and Zonara's coffins, along with Belierbey, wounded and confined to a chair. When Belierbey tells Bajazet how Mahomet and Zonara died, Bajazet swoons. When he recovers, he forgives Selimus, since his direct attack was more manly than Acomat's murders. Belierbey tells Bajazet of the slaughter of Natolia's citizens and then dies. Bajazet sends Aga to negotiate with Acomat, hoping he will relent in his cruelty. When Aga returns from Acomat, he tells Bajazet that Acomat vows to take Bajazet's life and has Mustaffa show Bajazet the present Acomat has sent him–Aga's severed hands. Bajazet is overcome with grief and does not know how to reply. He agrees to Mustaffa's counsel that Selimus be ordered to lead a force against Acomat. Bajazet offers to care for the injured Aga. He then greets Selimus, who vows his loyalty and begs pardon for his earlier deeds. Bajazet proclaims Selimus head of the Janissaries and sends him to fight Acomat. Selimus quickly returns, however, with Hali, Cali, Sinam, and the Janissaries, to announce that they have chosen Selimus as their new ruler and that Bajazet must consent to transfer power or be killed. Bajazet gives the crown to Selimus and wishes him a successful reign; he then exits with Aga to retire to Dimoticum. While traveling and dressed in a mourning cloak, Bajazet sits with Aga to lament their misfortunes. When Bajazet has cursed his stomach dry, Abraham offers him a drink. Bajazet asks Abraham to drink first. Bajazet then drinks and asks Abraham to help Aga drink. When they all have drunk, Abraham reveals that the cup contained poison and that he was sent by Selimus to kill them. Abraham dies and Bajazet curses fate, which led to his son murdering him rather than dying in battle. He bids Aga farewell and dies.

Mahomet rejects this counsel, vowing instead to stay and fight. Appears with Mahomet during the parley with Acomat and is later wounded. Escapes from Acomat with some soldiers and the bodies of Mahomet and Zonara, which he brings before Bajazet while confined to a chair. He explains how Acomat murdered both of them and, after Bajazet recovers from his swoon, relates the slaughter of the citizens of Natolia by Acomat's forces. He then dies of his injuries.

Thinking that they are thieves, he hides his meal. Corcut and the Page beg Bullithrumble for food, and, once they have promised not to rob him, he leads them to a feast of hogs' cheeks, tripe, and puddings. After Corcut is apprehended by Hali, Cali arrests Bullithrumble, who protests that he cannot leave his family and farm. As the party exits, Bullithrumble slips away.

Witnesses the return of the mutilated Aga from his embassy to Acomat, and Bajazet's decision to send a force under Selimus against Acomat. Hali and Cali witness Selimus' return and appointment as head of the Janissaries. They shift their loyalty to Selimus and once Selimus has gained the crown they are sent with an army against Corcut's forces and orders to strangle Corcut. Hali and Cali encounter Corcut's Page, who leads them to the disguised Corcut and Bullithrumble. Hali apprehends Corcut, and Cali arrests Bullithrumble, who slips away as the party exits. Hali and Cali enter with the Page and present Corcut to Selimus as prisoner. They leave with Selimus and Sinam to join in the siege of Amasia. He is then apprehended by Hali, who was led to him by the Page. Corcut agrees to go along with Hali. He is brought as a prisoner by Hali and Cali to Selimus. Knowing he will die, he describes his conversion to Christianity as well as the punishments that God has in store for Selimus. At the end of his speech, Selimus strangles him.

HALI BASSA

Courtier of Bajazet and son of Hali Bassa. As Bajazet sleeps, Hali Bassa and Cali Bassa both argue with Mustaffa against Acomat gaining the crown during Bajazet's lifetime. They both support Selimus as successor and Mustaffa agrees to also support Selimus so long as they remain loyal to Bajazet during his lifetime. Hali confirms for Selimus that Aladin and Amurath have fled after receiving warning from Mustaffa. Hali is then ordered to fetch Mustaffa and Solima. Hali, Cali, Sinam, the Janissaries and Selimus arrive at Amasia. After Selimus' forces storm Amasia and capture the Queen, Hali is ordered to strangle her. He refuses to surrender and is captured when Acomat's forces scale the castle walls. Acomat orders that he be thrown off of the castle wall on to a group of upturned spears. Mustaffa accompanies Bajazet when he encounters Selimus and his army on the way to Byzantium. In the ensuing battle, Mustaffa beats in Selimus. Later, as Bajazet sleeps, Mustaffa argues against Hali Bassa and Cali Bassa, who both support Selimus. Mustaffa counsels them to remain loyal to Bajazet but admits that after Bajazet's death he will support Selimus. When Bajazet awakens, Mustaffa presents Regan and the Messenger to him and then counsels Bajazet to keep the crown until his death, rather than transferring it to Acomat and causing a civil war. Later, Mustaffa tells Bajazet that his fears towards Acomat are likely exaggerated; he then witnesses the arrival of Mahomet's and Zonara's coffins and hears of Acomat's cruelty. When Aga returns from Acomat, Mustaffa takes out Aga's severed hands and shows them to Bajazet. Mustaffa then counsels the grieving Bajazet to use the force of his Janissaries against Acomat and to have Selimus lead them. Bajazet agrees with this counsel. Later, he joins Selimus, Sinam, and the Janissaries for the internment of Bajazet's and Aga's corpses in the Temple of Mahomet. Mustaffa, along with Sinam and the Janissaries, discuss with Selimus the flight of Acomat and his alliance with Ishmael and the Soldan of Egypt. After Selimus strangles Corcut and orders the siege of Amasia, he orders Mustaffa to govern Byzantium in his absence. After Selimus' exit, Mustaffa laments Selimus' plan to destroy all of Bajazet's offspring. He sends a messenger to Amurath and Aladin in Amasia to warn them of Selimus' aims, and then expresses fear for his own life, due to the jealousy of Sinam and Hali. Mustaffa's wife Solima enters to him and pleads with him to flee, but Mustaffa tells her not to fear. Hali brings Mustaffa and Solima before Selimus, where Mustaffa's betrayal of Selimus comes to light. Mustaffa attempts to justify his actions but Selimus rejects his pleas and has Sinam strangle him.

OCCHIALI

Follower of Selimus. Sent by Selimus to Bajazet to request a meeting, supposedly to show Selimus' loyalty but actually to demand the crown. He presents Selimus' request for a meeting to Bajazet, as well as Selimus' desire for another territory to govern. Desperate for food, they encounter Bullithrumble, who agrees to share some food with them if they promise not to rob him. As they exit, the Page in an aside decides to claim the large reward Selimus is offering for information on Corcut's whereabouts. SELIMUS

Son of Bajazet and Soldan of Trebizond. Begins his first scene with a long monologue in which he voices his disdain for the claims of morality, religion, or family, viewing them all as "bugbears to keep the world in fear, / And make man quietly a yoke to bear." Without these obstacles, he sees no reason to delay any longer his ambition for his father's crown. He sends Occhiali to request a meeting with Bajazet and then discusses options for gaining the crown with Sinam Bassa. Selimus rejects Sinam's worries about the Bashaws' loyalty and the threats Acomat and Corcut might pose; he also rejects Sinams reminder about punishments after death. When Selimus learns from Occhiali that Bajazet refuses to see him but has given him the territory of Samandria to govern, he rejects the gift as an attempt to buy him off and orders Sinam to prepare his forces to march on Byzantium. Selimus, leading his army, encounters Bajazet at the head of his army and is chastised by him for his disloyalty. Selimus rejects Bajazet's charge and claims that his army is mobilized to fight the Christians and regain territory Bajazet has lost. He also claims that Bajazet has been disloyal to him by willing the crown to Acomat. In the ensuing battle, Selimus is beaten in by Mustaffa. Later, alone, Selimus laments his defeat in battle and vows to continue fighting Bajazet with an even stronger force. After Acomat's conquest of Natolia, Selimus receives a message from Bajazet asking him to lead the Janissaries against Acomat. He initially likes the idea, since he could also use the same army against Bajazet, but is suspicious of a trap. When he sees Mustaffa's seal on the letter, though, he is reassured because Mustaffa's honesty would not allow him to agree to any treachery. Selimus appears before Bajazet and proclaims his loyalty and asks for pardon. When Bajazet appoints him head of the Janissaries and orders him to march against Acomat, Selimus thanks him but in an aside rejoices that he now has the power to force Bajazet to resign the crown to him. Selimus exits and shortly thereafter offstage voices hail him as Emperor of the Turks. Selmus, along with Hali, Cali, Sinam, and the Janissaries, return and compel Bajazet to surrender the crown to Selimus. Selimus then plots to have Abraham poison Bajazet and Aga. He sends Hali and Cali with an army against Corcut, whom he orders them to strangle. He plans to then kill Acomat; his sons Amurath and Aladin; and Solima, Bajazeth's daughter and Mustaffa's wife. When Abraham arrives, Selimus orders him to poison Bajazeth before he leaves Byzantium. After Abraham has carried out Selimus' order, Selimus, along with Sinam, Mustaffa, and the Janissaries, presides over the internment of Bajazet's and Aga's corpses in the Temple of Mahomet. He vows, once they have ceased mourning, to fight against Acomat. Later, Selimus, along with Mustaffa, Sinam, and the Janissaries, discuss Acomat's flight and his alliance with Ishmael and the Soldan of Egypt. Hali and Cali along with the Page bring in Corcut as prisoner. Selimus orders the Page, who has betrayed his master, to be starved to death, and allows Corcut to speak before he dies. After Corcut delivers a speech detailing his conversion to Christianity and the punishments God has in store for Selimus, Selimus strangles him. Selimus then orders Sinam to lay siege to Amasia, where Acomat's wife and his sons Amurath and Aladin reside. He then tells Mustaffa to govern Byzantium while he accompanies Sinam. Later Selimus receives word from Hali that Aladin and Amurath have fled after being warned by Mustaffa. He orders Hali to fetch Mustaffa and Solima and when they arrive he asks Mustaffa why he has betrayed him. Despite Mustaffa's explanation, Selimus orders Sinam to strangle him. Solima accuses Selimus of cruelty and he orders Sinam to strangle her as well. He then orders his force to continue on to Amasia. When they arrive, Selimus has a parley with the Queen of Amasia, who refuses to surrender to him. After storming the walls of Amasia, Selimus captures the Queen and orders Hali to strangle her. Selimus, along with Sinam, Hali, Cali, and the Janissaries, then encounter Acomat and his forces. Selimus mocks Acomat and challenges him to single combat and also defies Tonombey. After battling and defeating Acomat's forces, Selimus triumphs. He rewards Sinam for capturing Acomat and asks Acomat to kneel to him. When Acomat refuses and scorns Selimus, Selimus orders Sinam to strangle him. Recounting his path to success, Selimus ends the play vowing to lead a force against Egypt and Persia.

SINAM BASSA

Follower of Selimus. Warns Selimus that he risks his life if he kills his father, as the Bashaws may turn on him and his brothers Acomat and Corcut will seek revenge. He also reminds Selimus of the punishment he will face after death. After Selimus learns of Bajazet's reply to his request for a meeting, Sinam is ordered to prepare Selimus' forces to march on Byzantium. Sinam accompanies Selimus when his forces ecounter Bajazet and his forces on the way to Byzantium. Joins Selimus, Mustaffa, and the Janissaries for the internment of Bajazet's and Aga's corpses in the Temple of Mahomet. Sinam, along with Mustaffa and the Janissaries, discuss with Selimus the flight of Acomat and his alliance with Ishmael and the Soldan of Egypt. After Selimus strangles Corcut, he orders Sinam to lay siege to Amasia, where Acomat's wife and his sons Amurath and Aladin reside. On the way to Amasia, Mustaffa's betrayal is revealed, and once Mustaffa and Solima are brought before Selimus, Sinam is ordered to strangle both of them. Sinam, along with Selimus, Hali, Cali, and the Janissaries, arrive at Amasia. After the siege of Amasia, Sinam accompanies Selimus and his forces as they encounter Acomat and his forces. During the battle with Acomat's forces, Sinam captures Acomat and is rewarded by Selimus by being appointed general of the Janissaries. When Acomat refuses to acknowledge Selimus' authority, Sinam is ordered to strangle him.

SOLIMA

Wife of Mustaffa and Bajazet's daughter. After Selimus leaves Mustaffa in charge of Byzantium, Solima enters to Mustaffa and pleads with him to flee, but Mustaffa tells her not to fear. Hali brings Mustaffa and Solima before Selimus, where Mustaffa's betrayal of Selimus comes to light. Solima asks Selimus to spare Mustaffa and accuses him of cruelty when he refuses. Selimus orders Sinam to strangle her.

TONOMBEY

Son of the Egyptian Soldan Usan Cassanos and ally of Acomat. Joins Acomat and his forces as they head for Amasia to break Selimus' siege. After Acomat's forces encounter Selimus and his army, Tonombey mocks Selimus. After battle begins, Tonombey beats in Hali and Cali and is in turn beaten in by Selimus. He returns to report Acomat's defeat and his own inability to defeat Selimus in combat. Ashamed, he flees the battle.

USAN CASSANOS

A "ghost character". Soldan of Egypt and father of Tonombey. Enters into an alliance with Acomat.

VIZIR

Counsellor to Acomat. Approves of Acomat's plan to give up luxury and puruse arms, but warns that Bajazet might misinterpret Acomat's actions as a challenge to his authority. Later, when Acomat vows to take up arms against Bajazet, the Vizir counsels him to go to Amasia to raise a stronger force. Acomat will not delay, though. Joins Acomat and his soldiers as they conquer Natolia, killing Mahomet and Zonara in the process. After Acomat's forces have conquered Natolia, the Vizir introduces Aga, the messenger from Bajazet. Later, joins Acomat and Tonombey as they march for Amasia to break Selimus' siege. The Vizir is involved in the battle that ensues between Acomat's and Selimus' forces.
