A non-speaking character. In the masque, Phoebus wants to stop Achilles to protect Pryam and Hector. He loved his friend, Menetiades, who was killed by Hector. Thus, he takes revenge killing Hector.
AIAX
A "ghost character." Aiax is Cowsell's friend who is mentioned when Cowsell and Radger talk to each other in the taverns.
ANGEL
The Angel appears to Harrold and Eric to tell them to go back to the emperor because this battle belongs to Landgartha, who will reign with Reyner and whose virtues will make a Christian of her.
BOY
The Boy sings a song in front of the court to flatter Landgartha and also to heal the king as music is good for the sick. The song had been written by the king and it tells how sad a person feels when he is not loved.
BRUTUS
Only mentioned. In the masque, Brutus kills his father so he has to go to exile. At the end, he founds Britain. His descendants have been rulers since then. Brutus is presented as Reynard's ancestor.
COWSELL
Cowsell is one foolish coxcomb. In Act Two, he is considered as a substitute for Reyner as king of Denmark. He informs his king about the feelings of true love Landgartha has to cheer him up. Nevertheless, he thinks that Elsinora is the fairest. He also has a brother called Radger with whom he talks in Act Three before the play begins. He tells Radger that in the court people do not drink nor eat so much as in the countryside. Nevertheless, there are also many taverns in the city that the two brothers visit before leaving for the countryside.
CUPID
Only mentioned. Cupid is the god of love who is thought to have thrown an arrow of love to Reyner.
ELSINORA
Elsinora is Landgartha and Scania's aunt. She is asked by Hasmond to be the leader of his troops.
EMPEROR'S DAUGHTER
A "ghost character." She is considered to be the fairest lady by Hubba.
ERIC
Eric is Harrold's brother. He is going to help Harrold to recover his throne.
FATIMA
Fatima is Landgartha and Scania's cousin. She is assigned to Gotar as the leader of his troops by Frollo. Inguar asks her to be his wife, but she rejects the proposal.
POSTMAN, FIRST and SECOND
The First Postman tells Frollo that Landgartha is coming with her Norwegian troop of Amazons to Sweland killing the Swedish people and fighting against Frollo. The Second Postman tells Frollo that the king of Denmark is also coming against him and that he is to join Landgartha in their quest.
FORMER KING OF NORWAY
A "ghost character." He has been overthrown and murdered by Frollo.
FREDERICK
Frederick is a nobleman of Norway, loyal to the former king. Being in opposition to Frollo, he survives in the court of the tyrant with his friend Wermond. Meanwhile, he attends the masque with his servant.
FREDERICK'S SERVANT
He helps his master to get seated to attend the masque.
FROLLO
Frollo is the king of Sweland and the conqueror of Norway. He has murdered and overthrown the former king of Norway. His courtiers, Hasmond and Gotar, advise him to attract Landgartha to their favor at the same time that they ask to be the commanders of some of his troops. Thus, he gives 30 soldiers to Hasmond, and 25 and Fatima as their leader to Gotar. When he is told that Landgartha and Reyner are coming against him, he tells Hasmond and Gotar to get ready to fight against their enemies. He is quite sure about his victory and does not want to escape. However, when Landgartha finds him, he has to offer her to be his wife in order to join their forces. She refuses such a position and he is defeated by her in a fight.
FURIES
Only mentioned. Mythological characters to whom the Amazons are very often compared as they fight bravely as men.
GOTAR
Gotar is a courtier to Frollo. He helps Hasmond to attract Landgartha. He is given 25 soldiers and also Fatima to be their leader by Frollo. He takes part in Frollo's fight against Langartha and the king of Denmark.
HANNIBAL
Only mentioned. Historical soldier with whom Reyner's commanders are compared to encourage them to fight. Hannibal fought bravely against the Romans whom he almost defeated, but he was finally killed.
HARROLD
Harrold is a competitor for Denmark. He is supported by Valdemar against Reyner to reclaim his right to the throne. His brother, Eric, also helps him. He also asks Lewis the Debonaire for help. Harrold tells his brother that they will have 12,000 soldiers in Germany. With Lothaire and Eric, he wants to defeat Reyner before Landgartha arrives. Harrold attacks Reyner but he is surprised by Landgartha who hits him. Having lost the battle, Harrold rests with his brother when an Angel appears to them to suggest they return to the emperor.
HASMOND
Hasmond is Frollo's attorney. He tries to convince Frollo that they should attract Landgartha to their favor and make her their troop commander. He asks Frollo for 20 soldiers and also Elsinora or Scania as their leader, but Frollo gives him 30 soldiers and one of the Amazons. He fights for Frollo in his war against Landgartha and Reyner.
HECTOR
A non-speaking character. In the masque, he is killed by Achilles.
HUBBA
Hubba is a humorous merry Danish captain. He is considered to be a great warrior. He fights for Reyner. In Act Two, however, he is also thought to substitute his king. He does not want to marry any of the Amazons, and he tells Reyner that the emperor's daughter is prettier than anybody else, apart from a woman with having a good dowry. In Act Three, he attends the play with Marsisa, with whom he had fallen in love since he saw her fighting with Fatima. He wants to be her servant but she rejects him. Later, in Act Four, he goes to bring Inguar to Reyner, whom he opposes when he is ordered to destroy the kingdom after the king's departure. However, he goes with Reyner back to Denmark at the end.
INGUAR
Inguar is a Danish nobleman who supports Reyner. Later, with Valdemar, he plans to substitute one of the courtiers for the melancholic king. When the Amazons visit the court, he asks Fatima to be his wife but he is rejected. In Act Four, he is called by Reyner, who has asked him to prepare a fleet for his departure to Denmark. Finally, he brings the letter from Landgartha to Reyner.
LANDGARTHA
Landgartha is a Norwegian lady. She is the leader of the Amazons, an army of very brave women that fight like men to win eternal fame. She has the reputation of being a terrible general so she is wanted as the leader of Frollo's troops together with her Amazons. However, she joins Reyner to go against Frollo. Landgartha faces Frollo at the end of Act One as she only wants to marry the man who defeats her in battle. She also refuses Reyner's proposal a bit later making him melancholic. She will be courted by Reyner when she visits the court with her ladies. Being afraid of being attacked if she rejects him, she accepts the proposal, warning Reyner that he might be making a mistake. Happily married, she is surprised when her husband wants to leave her and asks him unsuccessfully to let her go with him. Finding out that her husband has gotten married again, she goes to Denmark. First, she gives a letter to Inguar for Reyner to tell him that she is coming. She arrives at the same moment that Reyner is being attacked by Harrold, whom she hits. She has forgiven Reyner in her letter. Defeating his enemy, she will depart again leaving half of her army with Reyner to protect him. She will keep on being his wife but he will not own her any more and she leaves for Norway.
LEWIS THE DEBONAIRE
A "ghost character." He is a Christian emperor who helps Harrold.
LOTHAIRE
Lothaire is a German nobleman that helps Harrold and Eric against Reyner.
MARSISA
Marsisa is a humorous gentlewoman, cousin to Fatima. In Act Three, she attends the play with Hubba wearing an Irish gown, a sword, "broags" on her feet and spurs. She has just arrived in the city and she receives the flattering of the brave Hubba. When Hubba leaves with Reyner, she regrets having said no to such a warrior as she loves him. She promises that she will love him when he comes back.
MENETIADES
Only mentioned. In the masque, he is described as a friend of Achilles.
PALLAS ATHENA
She appears in the masque. She is the mythological Greek goddess of wisdom. She refuses to stop Achilles as she supports him because his friend has been killed before by Hector.
PHOEBUS APOLLO
He appears in the masque. He is the mythological Greek god of the arts. He tells Pallas that they have to stop Achilles and help Pryam and Hector. Later, with the death of Hector, he tells Pryam about the foundations of Britain and the city of Rome.
PRIAM
A non-speaking character. Also spelled Pryam. In the masque, Pryam is a mythological character belonging to the war of Troy. He is Hector's father. Having the favor of Apollo, after Hector's death, the god tells him how Romulus and Remus founded the city of Rome and how Brutus founded Britain.
RADGER
Radger is Cowsell's brother. He is another foolish coxcomb. He talks to his brother about the eating and drinking habits in the court.
REMUS
Only mentioned. In the masque, he is mentioned as having founded the city of Rome with Romulus.
REYNER
Reyner is the king of Denmark. He joins Landgartha to defeat Frollo. Addressing his men, he tells Valdemar, Inguar and Hubba to fight like Hannibal when things are not in their favor. Arriving at the castle, he finds Landgartha fighting Frollo and proposes marriage to Landgartha. He becomes melancholic when Landgartha does not love him and he does not find any solution to that pain in the advice of his subjects. He writes a love song to flatter his beloved in front of his people. He finally wins her and lets his beloved depart for a short period of time until the day of their marriage. For the marriage there is a theatrical play and, in the masque, he is connected to a lineage of rulers coming back to the founder of Britain and his marriage with Landgartha is foreseen. Later, he sends Hubba to look for Inguar whom he has asked to prepare a fleet for him. Reyner is confused because he does not know if he really loves Landgartha. He does not want to say anything as he is afraid of the general who could kill him. Valdemar tries to deter him from fleeing, threatening the ruler. Angry for such a rebellion, he asks his commanders to destroy the kingdom, but Hubba complains to him about such an attitude. Reyner does not let Landgartha go with him. In Denmark, he marries Vraca so he will have to face Landgartha again. Reyner is sure that Landgartha will not take revenge because she is not as evil as he is. He gets the letter in which Landgartha tells him that she still loves him at the same moment that he is told of the arrival of the enemy. He is attacked by Harrold, but surprisingly he is saved by Landgartha, who has forgiven him. However, she departs soon to live a life by her own. Being abandoned, he rejects Vraca and promises Landgartha to test himself in order to win her respect again.
REYNER'S PHYSICIANS
"Ghost characters." A group of doctors who try to find the illness of the king of Denmark. They do not find any other natural sickness than unrequited love.
ROLFO
Rolfo is a drawer, a bartender. He gives beer to Cowsell and Radger when they are drinking in the taverns in Act Four.
ROMULUS
Only mentioned. in the masque he is described as having founded the city of Rome with his brother Remus.
SCANIA
Scania is Landgartha's sister. Hasmond asks for her to be the leader of his troops, and later Valdemar will ask her to be his wife and she will accept. In Act Five, she tells Reyner that Landgartha's departure is a test that he has to go through and that he has to show that he deserves her.
SCOUT
The Scout announces the arrival of the enemy to Reyner.
VALDEMAR
Valdemar is a near cousin to Reyner. He fights with Reyner against Frollo. When Reyner becomes melancholic, he talks to Inguar about substituting Hubba or Cowsell for Reyner. Later, also in love with one of the Amazons, he proposes marriage to Scania who accepts him as her husband. He also prepares the masque in order to enhance the legitimate right to the throne by his king. He is successful in his purpose and, at the end of the masque, everybody dances and each couple goes to bed together. However, when Reyner wants to come back to Denmark, Valdemar tries to deter him from making such a mistake. Valdemar threatens to overthrow Reyner because Valdemar is now in favor of Landgartha. He is going to use Harrold, who also has a right to the throne of Denmark.
VRACA
Vraca is Frollo's daughter. She is Reyner's second wife. Later, she is abandoned by Reyner when Landgartha leaves the king.
WEEPING LADY
The Weeping Lady is resentful of Frollo. She then she leaves the scene with Frederick and Wermond.
WERMOND
Wermond is a nobleman of Norway, loyal to the former king, and Frederick's friend. In Act One, he announces Frollo the arrival of two postmen with bad news.
